Viola
Repositioning an Italian craft beer for China
Challenge
Viola, an Italian craft beer brand popular abroad, wanted to expand into the Chinese market with a new recipe tailored to local tastes and produced entirely with local ingredients. The first beer in the line was brewed in Inner Mongolia. The challenge was to reposition the brand as more premium while making it relevant to young Chinese consumers, creating a visual identity that could connect local cultural references with the contemporary craft-beer scene.
Outcome
The design introduces a distinctive mark combining a golden hop icon with the Chinese character 麦 (wheat), symbolically linking craft beer culture with local ingredients and the target market. A secondary white mark completes the mirrored composition and subtly references Inner Mongolia. The new naming and visual concept were applied across packaging and advertising, creating a cohesive identity that positions Viola as a premium craft beer while resonating with local audiences.
